You’ve written your book. Tick. But with the publication date looming you need to let people know about it.
Perhaps you don’t have many followers on social media or many newsletter subscribers yet. Maybe you’re publishing your book traditionally but your publicist doesn’t have the capacity to do as much promotion as you’d like.
Wherever you’re starting from there are so many options for promoting your book. So, what should you focus on when there are so many things you could do?
Podcast Interviews
Podcasts are a really good way to get the word out about your book. In recent years they’ve become a formidable marketing tool.
I’m not suggesting you start your own (that’s a different conversation.)
What I’m talking about is getting yourself booked as a guest on other people’s podcasts.
Do you know there are over 1 million podcasts out there and 30 million episodes, as of April 2020, according to Podcast Insights?
Imagine talking to a ready-made audience about your book and imagine after learning about your book how many of these people would want to buy it.
As an author you may be an introvert and therefore the idea of appearing on a podcast to talk about your work might feel like a big step but you’ll gain experience and confidence as you go.
Is it hard to book podcast interviews?
Depending on your starting point it might be tough to get booked on the big podcasts like The Tim Ferriss show so start with the low hanging fruit. Approach the smaller, less-established podcasts first.
One of our authors had a small author platform and had never been interviewed on a podcast when we started our first round of outreach to podcasters in his niche. Within six months he’d appeared on 30 podcasts, three with large audiences.
Still not convinced?
There are many associated benefits of appearing on podcasts apart from making people aware of your book.
When you appear on a podcast not only are you positioning yourself as an expert in your field, especially important for non-fiction authors, but you’re networking, and making contacts.
It’s an opportunity to build your brand and raise your profile.
Appearing on podcasts is also great for your SEO and credibility. When people Google your name your podcast appearances will pop up.
And podcasts are a great tool for helping you build your author platform. As more people learn about and buy your book, you’ll likely gain more followers on social media and email subscribers.
